Cantilever Truss Competition
The cantilever truss competition is performed in the students’ 10th grade year and consists of applying theories learned throughout the year. A cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end and carries a load at the other where it is forced against moment and shear stress. A truss is comprised of triangles that eliminate the shear stress. Students design and mathematically analyze trusses (first by hand and then using engineering designing software) and then build a spaghetti cantilever truss to compete against other teams. The overall goal for students is to design a cantilever truss that can support a load many time its weight. The team whose truss that has the best ratio of the amount of load the truss can carry to the weight of the trust wins. The materials used (such as the spaghetti and glue) are supplied by Mr. Deloge.
Engineering Academy
Typical Course Sequence
1. Intro to Engineering Design (9th grade)
This course teaches problem-solving skills using a design development process. Models of product solutions are created, analyzed, and communicated using solid modeling CAD software.
2. Principles of Engineering (10th grade)
This course helps students understand how engineers and technicians use math, science, and technology as analyzsis and design tools to design programs and benifit society. Theory becomes pratical in a number of exciting engineering competitions.
3. Digital Electronics (11th grade)
This is a course in applied logic that encompasses the application of electronic circuits and devices. Computer simulation software is used to design and test digital circuitry prior to the actual construction of circuits and devices.
4. Civil Engineering & Architecture (12th grade)
Using hands on projects, students use state of the art software to solve problems and communicate design solutions. The roles of engineers and architects are explored in the planning and design of sites, residences, and commercial buildings.
5. Engineering Design & Development (12th grade)
In this capstone course, students work in teams to research, design, and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem. This major project is defended before a panel of outside reviewers at the end of the school year.
Line Following Drag Race Competition
The Line following Drag Race is performed by the 11th grade students and involves applying theories concerning electrical circuits and devices learned in class. Students create a program to command the car they build to be able to distinguish the difference between white and black. The goal of the line following drag race consists of the students producing a car that can sufficiently follow the 200 foot long white line quickly and efficiently. Mr. Deloge encourages students to wear matching t-shirts, if possible, in order to portray team spirit.
